Kroger latest retailer to sue Visa over signature verification
Convenience and fuel retailer Kroger has filed a lawsuit against Visa over EMV PIN debit-card transactions.
Kroger claims that the financial firm had fined them, threatened to increases fees and even withdraw the use of Visa cards from the supermarket chain if the retailer did not allow customers to validate their payments through signature instead of only PIN.
Visa informed Kroger that its payment machines were not up to date and did not comply with Visa´s EMV rules. The major issue is that Visa requires retailers to allow customers to verify their card payments by signature or PIN.
This is the latest of a string of lawsuits against Visa for debit card acceptance issues. Only two weeks ago retailing giant Walmart filed its own lawsuit against Visa over the same issue, as Walmart believes signature verification is a more fraud-prone.
