More than half of Esso’s retail network in Uruguay has already been rebranded as Axion.
Just over 40 of the 106 gas stations owned by Esso in Uruguay continue to operate under ExxonMobil's brand. The rest have already been rebranded as Axion, a subsidiary of China’s CNOOC.
The remaining Esso sites in Uruguay have until 31 August to finalize the rebranding process, according to industry publication Surtidores.
After 30 June, Axion gas stations will also switch fuel brands from Mobil to Castrol. The shift in fuel is the product of a joint venture signed to make Castrol the exclusive fuel supplier for Axion stations in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
In 2012, Argentinian group Bridas Corpotation and CNOOC completed the acquisition of ExxonMobil’s fuelling business in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, including a network of 751 sites.
As of 2017, Axion Energy had a market share of 15% en Argentina, 20% in Uruguay and 6% in Paraguay.
