Scientists discover new system to charge EVs in 15 minutes

A group of Swiss scientists might have just revolutionized the future of electric vehicles (EVs) by developing an innovative charging system that is able to cut charging time from 8 hours to 15 minutes.

Last update:

Researchers from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EFLP) have come up with a charging station system that can power-up an EV in just 15 minutes with an incredible 4.5MW of power, reported the International Business Times.

Currently, the fastest charging system on the market belongs to Tesla. Its Supercharger stations can provide 170 miles of driving distance after a 40-minute charge up.

However, if you are a not a Tesla user you will have to depend on rapid, fast charging or slow charging stations for your electric vehicle.

The Swiss scientists believe that electric vehicles will not be able to substitute petrol, diesel-fuelled vehicles until it manages to cut charging times. Even the modern Tesla Supercharger stations (170 miles on a 40 minute charge) are still far away from the 1.5 minutes it takes to fill up a diesel car that can run for 620 miles.

"Electric cars will change our habits. It's clear that, in the future, several types of charging systems – such as slow charging at home and ultra-fast charging for long-distance travel – will co-exist,” said Massimiliano Capezzali, deputy director of EPFL's Energy Center, who coordinated the project.
