World's largest oil and gas companies unite behind climate change

The CEOs of 10 global oil and gas companies have bowed to fight climate change in a collaborative statement ahead of next month's United Nations (UN) climate change meeting.

Last update:

Through this unprecedented statement, the heads of the 10 biggest oil and gas companies, which account for a fifth of the oil and gas production and a 10% of the world´s energy, have declared their support for real change in the upcoming 21st session of the UN Conference of Parties to the UN Framework on Climate Change (COP21).

The ten companies – BG Group, BP, Eni, Pemex, Reliance Industries, Repsol, Saudi Aramco, Shell, Statoil and Total - form the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI). The statement said they were hopeful  governments will create “clear stable policy frameworks that are consistent with a  2°C future” so that, in turn, their companies “will support the implementation of these frameworks because they will help our companies to take informed decisions and make effective and sustainable contributions to addressing climate change.”

Some of the key issues which they agreed to collaborate on are optimizing the efficiency of their own operations, as well as working with manufacturers and consumers to improve vehicle efficiency; strengthening the importance of natural gas in the global energy mix and reducing methane emissions from their operations; contributing to the increasing share of renewables; incrementing the energy access for those in need; and working together to ensure new, collective climate solutions.

From a retailing point of view, this statement could mean an increased interest and support from the major oil and gas companies in the development of the alternative fuelling market. Traditionally, it was the smaller, innovative companies which focused their efforts on the development of non-traditional vehicle fuelling, suffering a limited amount of resources to come up with new technologies and solutions.
