Canada: North Vancouver first to impose climate change warning on gas pumps

North Vancouver councillors voted unanimously in favour of a proposal requiring filling stations in the city to place climate change warning labels on their gas pumps. This makes North Vancouver the first Canadian city to make the climate change initiative into a law, according to Global News.

The idea behind the law came from a Canadian non-profit environmental group, Our Horizon, which visited Canadian cities to propose the ‘lowest cost climate initiative in the world’, reported vancitybuzz.

The climate change stickers, which are comparable to health warning labels found on cigarette packs, aim to raise awareness on the impact of gasoline and oil production, reported KamloopsBCNow.

“It is 2015 and we need to talk about how we are going to move forward as a society on a reduced carbon or carbon-free diet and it is going to be a challenge,” said North Vancouver Mayor Darrel Mussatto in a Global News report.

The content and design of the message as well as when these warnings will be displayed at North Shore gas stations are not yet clear, added the report.

Similar initiatives have been also launched in the United States particularly in Seattle, Berkeley, and San Francisco.
