Pilot Company, the firm that operates Pilot and Flying J locations across the United States, has announced a new plan to develop a coast-to-coast electric vehicle (EV) fast charging network. The retailer will collaborate with GM to further advance the nation’s infrastructure for EV drivers by enabling more access to charging services.

The plan involves the East and the West Coasts being connected by a chain of 2,000 fast chargers operated and maintained by EVgo. In addition, it involves the opening of 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centres throughout the road to house some of the equipment while also GM customers will receive special benefits and discounts.

“GM and Pilot Company designed this program to combine private investments alongside intended government grant and utility programs to help reduce range anxiety and significantly close the gap in long-distance EV charger demand. Our travel centres are well-equipped to accommodate EV charging with 24/7 amenities and convenient proximity to major roadways across the country,” said Shameek Konar, CEO of  Pilot Company.

The new sites will feature various fast charging stalls, including high power fast chargers capable of offering up to 350 kW1. Other amenities include canopies to protect customers and pull-through capability that allows for convenient charging of electric pickup trucks and SUVs pulling trailers. A 50-mile interval is expected to separate each targeted installation.

“We are committed to an all-electric, zero-emissions future, and ensuring that the right charging infrastructure is in place is a key piece of the puzzle. With travel centres across North America, Pilot Company is an ideal collaborator to reach a broad audience of EV drivers,” added Mary Barra, Chair and CEO of GM.

The project builds upon Pilot Company’s recently announced “New Horizons” initiative to invest $1 billion to upgrade its network of travel centres across the nation and offer new services and amenities to customers.
