English Español Asda reduces EV charging points

Over 100 chargers were cut down amidst a strong push towards e-mobility adoption across the UK market.

Last update:

Asda has cut down on electric vehicle (EV) chargers across its retail network in the UK. According to recent data by RAC, the chain now has 46 EV chargers in operation in contrast to its charging network of 165 points by the start of 2023.

The news was known after the RAC unveiled data of the brand’s currently available charging points. According to The Telegraph, more than two thirds of the charging equipment have been removed.

The media cites Asda’s partnership with bp pulse coming to an end as the main reason for this reduction. The company now offers charging solutions at only 22 of its locations across the country.

Furthermore, it has become the only supermarket chain to have slashed its charging infrastructure, while competitors such as Morrisons and Tesco have been increasing their investment in this sector.

Last year, the chain acquired almost 350 service station locations from EG Group, distributed across the UK and Ireland. The company struck a deal with Tesla last November to install charging locations across EG’s network in the country and the rest of Europe. For now, the agreement does not include an extension to Asda’s footprint.
